Wes Gordon is entering the eyewear arena in partnership with Silhouette. The New York-based designer has teamed with the Austrian eyewear firm on a lightweight sunglass design that will be featured in Gordon’s spring 2016 show on Friday.
Gordon traveled to Austria to meet with the Silhouette team and decided on a small, round-shaped lens fabricated in four colors — nude, gray, green and bright blue — anchored by thin metallic wire frames. The lenses are hand-sanded around the perimeter and painted with a faint line of contrast-colored paint. The designs are based on Silhouette’s original Titan Minimal Art frames, which weigh less than two grams and are constructed without hinges, screws or rims. At present, their collaboration appears to be a one-season deal.
Gordon said of the partnership: “For us, product collaborations — the right ones — are so fun because we are a small company focused on a collection of women’s ready-to-wear clothes and to have an opportunity to play in new categories is really exciting and energizing.”
He added of the concept behind his first eyewear design: “Something felt really fresh about small, round shapes, especially for our woman — it’s very much a mix of craft and femininity but with a sense of something clean and modern.”
Gordon likened his Silhouette collaboration to his ongoing partnership with Manolo Blahnik – who designs shoes for each of his fashion shows — saying that consulting accessory-specific brands lends an “expertise” that he would not have otherwise.
At present, he has no plans to launch accessories in-house, saying, “For me, it’s very much about timing. We are very committed now to continuing to develop and build our core business….I think it’s important to wait until you are really ready and have something unique to say about that category and the infrastructure to do it.”
